What We Do

CBK IMS is a unique institution committed to strengthening the financial sector through world-class capacity-building interventions. Since its inception, the Institute has remained responsive to the dynamic needs of the financial industry needs, driven by a rapidly changing business landscape, evolving global economic trends and the growing demand for quality services.

Recognising that capacity building is central to the success and competitiveness of financial institutions, CBK IMS has continually expanded its offerings to support this growth. The Institute serves as a gateway for knowledge dissemination not only in Kenya but across Sub-Saharan Africa, making it a hub for regional f inancial training and development.

With a vision to become a regional Centre of Excellence, CBK IMS has built a diverse and experienced pool of experts from local, regional and international markets. These professionals support the Institute’s mission of nurturing highly skilled manpower to contribute to financial stability and sustainable development in Africa.

Looking ahead, CBK IMS is investing in infrastructure and intellectual resources aimed at solidifying its status as a globally recognised intellectual centre. In the coming decade, the Institute aspires to make impactful contributions, not only to the Central Bank of Kenya, but also to national, regional and international f inancial ecosystems.

Learning at CBK IMS

Our environment is serene, far removed from the bustling of Nairobi City. Cleanliness is next to godliness as the old maxim goes, and at CBK IMS, we pay perfectionist attention to the issue of sanitation. We have workers who are hardworking and keep a septic environment that is conducive for learning.

The surroundings are adorned with poetry inspiring flowers and beautiful plants. Our school is well equipped with all necessary facilities for a fun filled education journey.

The School, in collaboration with Moi University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), runs specialized post graduate academic programs, structured to complement education and training offered by local academic institutions, which focus primarily on theoretical academic training with little emphasis on addressing practical needs of the financial sector. KSMS programs focus not only on theoretical academic learning, but also incorporate a participatory approach and use of contextualized case studies.

Our History

Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS) was established as a School of the Central Bank of Kenya and registered in 1997 as a corporate entity, limited by guarantee; under the Companies Act (Chapter 486 of the Laws of Kenya); with the primary mandate to build capacity for the banking industry and support the Bank deliver on its core mandate of fostering a stable and well-functioning financial system.

This was in response to the bank failures experienced in 1980/1990s, which were mainly attributed to inadequate staff with requisite skills in banking, financial management, implementation of economic reforms and inadequate postgraduate economists required to formulate economic policies. The Central Bank of Kenya and the Ministry of Finance therefore found it necessary to establish KSMS as a training institution dedicated to offering specialized education and training programs in banking, finance, economics and other related studies, which were not available in other training institutions and universities.

The school, which started off by taking over short term management and skill development programmes hitherto run by the defunct College of Banking and Finance (CBF), has continued to offer demand driven short term management development courses and filled in gaps for advanced knowledge and education in long term postgraduate programs tailored specifically for the financial sector.
